The Mahtomedi Fishing Team is a student-led non-profit 501c3 organization, recognized by Mahtomedi High School that operates under Minnesota Junior B.A.S.S. At this time the team is only established for those in 5th to 11th grade. Each angler that would like to be on the team needs to also register with B.A.S.S. to become a member. The season runs May through August with team meetings/practices held prior to the start of the season at Mahtomedi Schools. The 2024 team fees are $185 for high school level (8th - 11th grade) and $145 for junior level (5th-7th grade). Once the student is registered for the team, paid team fees and has become a member with B.A.S.S. they will be added to the Mahtomedi Fishing Team group on TeamSnap to receive further communication throughout the season. During the season there are weekly derbies that are designed to be a fun and educational experience. Though other clubs will be fishing on the lake with us, our anglers have access to an App called FishDonkey, which is used to record the length of each fish (large or small mouth bass) caught prior to releasing them. At the end of the evening the angler with the highest accumulative recorded length not only gets bragging rights but receives a prize and accumulates points towards a championship tournament.. their top 6 scores for the fishing season determines their invite. So you can miss a few Thursday nights and still make it in. The derbies are typically on Thursday evenings at local lakes. But this is subject to change to do weather and coaches discretion. The team typically fishes on local lakes, such as White Bear Lake, Forest Lake, Bald Eagle, etc. Locations are chosen by the coach(es) and communicated out as known. For the 3 competitive HS tournaments anglers fish as a team of two per boat with an official boat captain, with the exception of derbies in the derbies you can fish as many students on you boat because it is an individual angler event. Though it is easiest if you have your own boat and captain available it is not required. We can work to find you one. The boat captain can be Neighbors, Friends, Family, etc. They must be 18 years of age or older and not fishing as a member of a high school team, has a boat 16’ in length and a working engine cut-off tether, and can drive a big motor with knowledge of watercraft safety laws and rules in Minnesota. Captains do not fish with the team (except in derbies), they are just there to drive the boat from point to point and ensure all rules are being followed. The captains are also there to help educate and teach the students by walking them through how to do things and allowing only the student to be hands-on. The students are only allowed to operate a trolling motor, captains are not permitted to (there is an exception to this rule..if the boat capitan doesn't feel the kids can operate his boat safely he can operate it to prevent damage to his boat) Each individual in the boat must wear a life jacket at all times when the big motor is running (This is a disqualifying infraction) All boat captains need to check with their team's coach to go through a background check protocol. An outline of the boat captain's responsibilities is provided upon completion of background protocol. Each angler must have an active Minnesota DNR Watercraft permit. The course can be completed online from home, via home study or by completing a DNR classroom at locations around the state. The online option is the recommended method for convenience. Updated 3/28/2024 There are competitive tournaments held within the season in which you compete against other fishing teams within our conference. The Northeast Metro Conference tournaments are a one day event with official weigh-ins and awards given by Junior B.A.S.S. to the top three boats with the highest accumulative weight for no more than 5 fish per boat. All scores are recorded at weigh-in and aid in the determination of advancing to the state tournament. For the 2024 High School level (8th - 11th grade) season the conference tournaments will be held: June 21st at Forest Lake July 1st at Waconia Lake July 19th at East & West Rush Lake For the Junior level (5th - 7th grade) you will be able to sign up on the Northeast Metro Conference Junior Opens website on May 15, 2024 at 5pm. The Junior Open will advance the top 15 place finishers to the 2024 MN Junior B.A.S.S. Junior State Championship will be July 19th on Championship Lake in Minnewaska, MN. The Minnesota Junior B.A.S.S. High School State tournament is a two day event held at a different lake each year within Minnesota. Dates and location are not announced until later in the season. The tournament hosts up to 70 boats from across the state. The weight-in scores documented at the Minnesota Junior B.A.S.S. State tournament qualifies high school teams to advance to the National Championship held the following summer within the U.S.
